Scope & Content |
A diary written by an unknown author. It was likely written in the mid to late 1700s. A wide variety of topics are covered: medicinal remedies, religious persecutions, religion, spirituality, genealogy, history of sugar, history of tea, international relations, war, colonialization etc. There is very little related directly to York, other than a short passage on the Candlemas Raid and a brief history on the establishment of the town. There are two passages that indicate a Lyman family member may be the diarist. One is on page 66 [see image] and notes vital records of two Lyman relatives. Moses and, his wife, Mindwell Lyman; parents of Isaac and Job Lyman. The other is a passage about the salary given to the diarist by the parish [p.112]. Given the time period, it is possible that this diary was written by Rev. Isaac Lyman. Most of the writings appear to be passages taken from other texts. |
