Handwritten letter dated April 29 with no year date, but probably circa 1860s from Andrew Leonard Emerson in Charlestown, Massachusetts to his mother Harriet (Phillips) Emerson and his father Charles Octavius Emerson in York. In this letter Leonard states that he arrived in Charlestown safe the same day he left them and went directly aboard the ship. He slept in the cabin and got his meals at the same house the mates do. The captain of the ship has not said anything to Leonard about wages but the mate says probably 8 to 10 dollars. Captain Lord on the ship is one of the owners and Leonard says that he is a very good man. Leonard expects to go to New Orleans, then either Liverpool or Havre. Transcription: Charlestown April 29th My Dear Parents, I arrived here safe the same day I left you. I took a cab in Boston and came directly aboard the ship. The Capt was not aboard but was in Boston. Both mates seem to be very fine men. I sleep in the vain and get my meals at the same service the mates do. The Capt. has not said anything to me yet about wht wages I shall get, but the Mate says it was 8 to 10 dollars. I handed Capt. Lord your letter today. He is one of the owners and from what little I saw of him I should thikn him a very good man. I don't know where we shall go to from New Orleans but probably to Liverpool or Havre. Please write to New O. We sail tomorrow. Love to all - The Capt. name is Lord From your Affec. son A.L.E. |
