Scope & Content |
Handwritten letter dated March 8, 1854 from Andrew Leonard Emerson in Boston to his parents Charles O. Emerson and Harriet (Phillips) Emerson in York. He has signed himself onto a new ship that pays him a little less than he used to earn. He thinks he will like the new ship as there will be a lot of work aboard. He tells his father that they sold his hay for 21.00 per ton. He seems to be heading towards New Orleans. Transcription: Dear Parents, I arrived here Monday afternoon as soon as we hauled in to the wharf I came up and signed articles. Wages have fallen a little since I was last here so that I only get 17.00 per month. I have not seen Mr. Lord yet but shall call on him today. The ship hauled in the stream this morning I have not got my clothes down yet but shall in the morning. The will said just as soon as there is a chance I have been aboard. I think I shall like the ship much one thing I am well convinced[?] of is there will be plenty of work aboard of her. Edward Baker has sold your hay, father, for 21.00 per ton. I shall have the pleasure of hearing from you as soon as we arrive in N.O. Love to all Yours in haste, Leonard. |
