Scope & Content |
Handwritten letter dated May 13, 1851 from Andrew Leonard Emerson in Andover to his parents Charles O. Emerson and Harriet (Phillips) Emerson in York. He thanks his parents for sending money and laments not being able to come home for his brother Franks visit. He reports that his uncle donated a field to the school for them to play football on. He also talks about his schooling discussing his studies and the difficulty of the classes. "How I wish I was going to be at home (for Franks visit)... but I suppose you do not want to see me enough for that". He states that fractions are vulgar and that his current school is much more strict than the previous ones. Transcription: Dear Parents, I received yours of the 5th, with great pleasure, also the money enclosed, very much obliged to you for it. I suppose you have seen of Frank's arrival in Charleston the 28th. I suppose he will be at home soon. How I wish I was going to be at home. But I suppose you do not want to see me enough for that however. I continue to like here first rate, Uncle has given us a large lot of land to play football on and they formed a club to pay 5cts to join and we have got enough to get a good India Rubber ball. We have got most through two books in Geometry and am in interest in Arithmetic. We began at vulgar fractions. They are a great deal more strict here than in any other school that I have ever went too. But I must close as the bell is ringing for prayers. From your affec son. Give my love to Aunt M. & Abbie.
