Scope & Content |
Handwritten letter dated July 22, 1853 from Andrew Leonard Emerson in Liverpool, England to his parents Charles O. Emerson and Harriet (Phillips) Emerson in York. He is writing about his time on the ship with Capt Lord and about Liverpool and the docks there. He also mentions missing home and wishing he could be there to help his father with the fields, but suppose that it is better that he is away. He continues to like the work, and is treated kindly by Captain Lord and his wife and all the other officers. He says he wouldn't leave the ship on any account. He then discusses travel plans from Liverpool back to New Orleans, possibly to Boston. He describes the docks at Liverpool. Transcription: Dear Parents, As the steamer goes tomorrow I now hasten to write you. We arrived here Wednesday after a quick run of 40 days. Last your letter dated the 7th I assure it gave me great pleasure to hear from you but was sorry not to recognize your handwriting father and I hope you will make up for it next time. I wish I could be at home to help you on your hay but I suppose it's "all for the best" for me to be away. I continue to like first rate I am as contended and happy as circumstances will admit. I am treated with all possible kindness as Capt. Lord & lady and by all the officers. I would not leave the ships upon any account. We are going back to Orleans again we shall be ready in about three weeks. It will take us at least 7 weeks to go. We may go to Boston from Orleans but most likely back here again. The next letter I will write I will tell you something about Liverpool for I have not had time to look around yet, The Dock's here are perfectly splendid being of immense size and built of handsome stone. We lay in the Victoria dock. I intended to have written Abbie and Aunt M but as the steamer goes so soon I shall not be able to. Write soon. You may expect a long letter from me before we go away. Love to all the family and to Ed when you write him. But as the Capt. is waiting to take the letter up I must close. From your Affec son Leonard. |
