Handwritten letter dated Kennebunk, Maine June 25 with no year date, but probably circa 1849 from his time in school. Letter is from Andrew Leonard Emerson to his mother Harriet (Phillips) Emerson and his father Charles O. Emerson in York. In the letter Leonard states that he received his parent's bundle safe and sound and was very thankful. He was going to buy himself a pair of shoes since his "don't look fit for Sunday." He asks his parents if he can come home soon. His roommate is Albert Moody, and that they are going to take a ride this term. Lastly, he says he's not homesick in the least. Portion of the letter has been removed. Transcription: Kennebunk June 25 Dear Parents I was very sorry I could not get this letter reayd to send to day, but had not time as I have to get a lesson. I recieved your bundle safe and sound and am very much obliged to you for it. I am going to buy me a pair of shoes as mine don't look fit for Sunday, Mr. Pike keeps [?] boarders and Mrs. Pike keeps no help [illegible] it is rather hard for her. Won't you le tme come home the [illegible] how I should like to. Please write how I shall come up. Albert is coming now do let me come. I like down here first rate, there are some first rate fellows down here we have about 50 scholars in all. I keep a record book and like it very well. I get along in Geography and Grammar complete. I room with Alber tMoody. If you conclude to let me come home the fourth which I hope you will write if I shall come up with Topping[?] monday. We are all going to take a ride this term we have all go to pay 12 1/2 cents toward it. Tell Ed and Abbie to write a good ong letter next time you write. Love to all from your Affec. Son. Write soon.
