Object Name |

Dates of Creation |
March 17, 1858 |
Scope & Content |
Handwritten letter dated March 17, 1858 from Andrew Leonard Emerson in Liverpool to his family in York in two parts. The first is to his mother Harriet (Phillips) Emerson and the second part is to his sister Abigail Clarissa (Emerson) McIntire and aunt Margaret Phillips (most likely). To his mother he apologizes about not writing for some time. He writes about how his voyage was very cold and stormy but luckily the ship didn't get damaged. In the second part to his sister he writes that the ship may come to Boston next and if so he will visit home. He also writes that him and his brother Frank's ship traveled in tandem for two weeks and how they were able to see each other with a spy glass on the others ship at times. "Frank and I came over the bar at [New Orleans] the same day and continued in company for a fortnight". Transcription: Dear Mother, Your letter was received and had with much pleasure. And I should have answered it by the last steamer but we have been very busy ever since we "Docked" and we can't have a light aboard after 9 O'clock. So you see I have not had much time, I suppose you will have seen on this reaches[?] you the arrival of the ship reporter in the papers. We have had a long, cold, and stormy passage the worst I think I ever made. But Fortunately we did not sustain any very serious accident. We are now about one half lighter and if it is fine weather shall finish this work. I hope the next letter father will write a few lines if no more. You did not mention him at all in your last. I must now close with much love. Your Affec. Son Leonard Dear Sister and Aunt, I have only time to write a little as it is most I, so you must excuse it. I shall have more time in a few days and then I will write you a long letter. I suspect the ship will go to Boston from here altho it is not fully decided upon yet. If so you may expect me home about the middle of May. How do you think it would do for me to take a short trip to Stanford from B [Boston]? Please give me your opinion in your next Abbie, also how you think it would do to make her a small present, and what would be most suitable? Answer by return of post or it will be too late. I think father & mother's miniatures very good don't you think Aunt M.? Now all I want is yours and than I shall be "all right". Frank & I came over the bar at N.O. [New Orleans] the same day and continued in company for a fortnight. We used to be near enough sometimes to distinguish each other with a spyglass. I have not heard of his arrival yet. I must now say goodnight as the bell is ringing. [?] was very kind to write me even a long letter. [?] Lent. |
