Handwritten letter dated January 19, 1872 from Frances "Fannie" (Phillips) Emerson in Boston to her aunt Harriet (Phillips_ Emerson in York. She writes about how her and Leonard went to the English opera Bohemian Girl and that she likes their new ship better than their old one "the Gaspee". She also writes about things she bought such as lace and a collar as well as silk that was "marked down very low" that she will be sending back to the family, including Japanese silks of various colors. The ink on the letter is also very faded making it very difficult to read. Transcription: My dear aunt, As I am not expecting to see you I thought I would drop you a line as you might be expecting to see us. I don't know when I shall come down, now but will write in season[?] for Frank to go on after me. Last night we went to hear Parepa-Rosa sing [Euphrosyne Parepa-Rosa, 19th century British opera singer]. Oh! I was enraptured. I never heard [?] more beautiful. It was an English opera. Bohemian girl [name of opera]. "I dreamt I dwelt in marble halls". I like the ship very much Lent has shown a great deal of haste and thoughtfulness in arranging a room for me and I like it better than the Gaspee on many accounts. The berth is as wide as any bed. I looked for Aunt Alden's lace yesterday, two quite high the width on her pattern is 62 1/2' and 82 1/2 etc. but I'll do the best I can if she will be delighted. Tis very pretty and very nice [?]. I send a collar. Abbie wanted me to get costing the enormous sum of seventeen cents if it is not grand enough. I can get one for a [?] veyr pretty. Things are marked down very low. Japanese siks, so [?] very pretty, dark blue and blk, brown and green & blk stripes. Tell Em and Abbie and Rand they might like one and now is their time. They would make pretty P[?]. I think I am going to spend the day at the Thayers and must hurry and get ready now. Lent sends love to each and all and so does your loving and affec. Fannie. I have a beautiful little hat. |
