Scope & Content |
A ledger that has records from two different time periods. The first runs from March 1797 to Dec. 1809. It documents many aspects of economic activity related to rural life. These include maintaining the health of well-being of farm animals, fencing, cutting trees, haying, burning, planting and harvesting. This ledger appears to have been kept by Timothy Lyman, who worked as a laborer at various area farms. The accounts include Samuel Harris, John Goodrich, Francis Eldridge, Joseph Emerson, Samuel Cousens, Joseph Cousens, Aaron Drown, Jonathon Boston, Joel Allen, Benjamin Estes and Stephen Littlefield. The second time period covered runs from 1848-1849 and was both an account of labor done on the highway in District 17 in York in 1849 and an account of labor done at various area farms, including Joseph Bragdon Jr., George Patch, Joseph Sewall Jr., Nathaniel Sewall, John B. Fernald and William H. Sewall. In the back of the book, on the last page, is an accounting of building a barn. There is no date or name attached to it. A few pages before that, is an accounting of expenses incurred during service as a selectman. Again, there is no date or name on the page. A piece of decorative paper tucked inside the ledger. |
