Scope & Content |
Handwritten letter dated July 18th, 1849 from Andrew Leonard Emerson in Kennebunk to his parents, aunt, and siblings in York while he is away at school (Union Academy). The letter is in two parts one to his parents and the other to his aunt and siblings. He thanks his parents for sending a cake and asks them for two calico shirts, some letter paper, and "Dough-Nuts". Leonard remarks that he heard they had some very good fireworks up to York for the fourth, which is apparently something new for York. Leonard notes that "at times I feel very lonely but try to make the best of it... I don't want to set my eyes on old York again till the term is out. And when I come home I want to have a good time," To his Aunt and brother, sister (Edward Octavius Emerson & Abigail Clarissa Emerson), he talks about his studies to his brother as well as going down to south Berwick with him. He asks his aunt and sister Abbie for a lot of cake as well. Transcription: My Dear Parents, I recieved your letter by Albert, and was very glad you thought to send me that cake. You wanted to know, in your letter, if I had shirts, enough. I have got as many white ones as I shall want, but I wish you would make me 2 calico ones and send them and some letter paper and dough-nuts in a bundle by Mr. Topping. I kept a journal and like it very much. I get along very well in my studies. I have only got about 6 weeks more to stay and Edward must not go away till I come home. Albert says that they had some very good fire works up to York the fourth. It is osmething new for York. At itmes I feel very lonely but I try to make the best of it. If I feel ever so home sick, I shall not want to come up to York till the term is out. Mr. Pike said I may come up to York next week when the term is out. Mr. Pike said I may come up to York next week when the term will be half out to spend the Sabbath if I wanted to, but I don't want to set my eyes on Old York again till the term is out. And when I do come home I want to have a good time and go of to School again. I don't see what sister Abbie wanted to be home-sick for. I would not of written home that I was if I had been in her place. I suppose that you were very much supprised to see Aunt Marga [Margaret] back again. I hope her eye will not trouble her any more. The next letter I have I hope father will write. Send those things as soon as you can but as I want to write to the rest I must close. Fro your affec. Son Lent. My dear Aunt and brother sister, As I have written the rest, I will endevor to pen you a few lines. I was very glad to hear you had got home again once more. You said in your letter something about coming down to see me. I guess you had better not come down as I am coming home so soon. I study geography, grammar, arithmetic, chemistry, morral[sic] science. I like down here very well. Ed you write and tell mem weather[sic] you have got the gun fixed or not. You asked me to join the cadets if there were any down here but ther[sic] are none. You must not go away to South Berwick till I come home because I want to go with you. I guess there would be no danger of our getting a fighting if you wanted to I should not send and tell me when the term begins. Abbie you and Aunt must continue to send me a lot of cake. I would write more if I could but can not send that bundle next Thursday if possible. Love to all, Mary Ann and the rest. Excuse all mistakes as I am in haste. Sarah and Hannah sends their love to Abbie from your affec. Neph. and Brother. Leonard Of Union Acamdey |
