Handwritten letter dated July 11, 1942 from Sgt. Ray Turner to his mother Mrs. Colby W. Turner. Ray is writing from Fort Banks Winthrop, Mass. to his mother in York Village, Maine. Written on United States Army Harbor Defences of Boston stationery. Transcription: UNITED STATES ARMY Harbor Defenses of Boston Med. Det, 1106 CASU Fort Banks Winthrop, Mass. July 12, 1942 Dear Mother, Just a line to let you know all is going well here. As far as I know now my furlough starts Fri. night at midnight. There is a probability I might be able to get out Fri. noon though so will call you when I know for sure. Have taken the liberty of inviting Howie up for over Sun. I don't know whether he will be able to come, however. I hope so. There are two things I would like while I am home if we could have it. One is some cottage cheese with tomatoes. Where I got that sudden craving I don't know but I love it. My other desire is to spend Sun. at the Beach if Howie comes up or even if he doesn't. Possibly a picnic lunch? We'll see anyway when I get home. It is going to be darn good to be able to relax and forget everything for a change. So long for now. Love Ray |
