Scope & Content |
Handwritten letter dated August 30, 1873 from Andrew Leonard Emerson in Liverpool, England to his mother Harriet (Phillips) Emerson in York. In this letter Leonard says that he will be on the way to New York, taking what he can for cargo along the way before they reach San Francisco. He is on the ship "Friedlander," which is a very "showy ship" and attracts a lot of attention in port. Appears Leonard is done with the ship "Gaspee" and it was a good trade. Transcription: My Darling Mother, I have a moment to spare & will just drop you a line to let you know how I am getting along. I have "laid the ship on" for New York & shall drive ahead & take what I can get in the shape of cargo so as to get out in time to load in the line for Saint Francisco [San Francisco] before frieghts[?] decline as they are good there now. We shant make much out from here but that we don't count on. The Saint Francisco business is what pays. The "Friedlander" is attracting considerable attention here. She is in fine order & is a very showy ship. I wish you could see her. Our passage home was very good, same as others. If she was sparred heavy enough we should do much better in light winds. I hope to make great dispatch here. Will write more in few days Love to all and keep job[?[ to your own dear self. Am so glad your health is so good. The "Gaspee" didn't leave anything & it was a good trade my selling the six month[?], was a good thing. If you need any money before I get home, draw in Thayer Good, bye dear mother. Yours affectionately, Leonard. [on side of page] Recvd Capt. Fernald's letter also a nice letter from Stazen[?]. |
