Handwritten letter dated May 29, 1853 from Andrew Leonard Emerson in New Orleans to his parents Charles O. Emerson and Harriet (Phillips) Emerson in York. He writes about how the ship he is working on is loading up cargo to take to Liverpool. He mentions that they may stop in Boston when they come back and that if they do he will visit home. Transcription,: Dear Parents, I received your letter last Thursday and was happy to hear you were all well to. We commenced loading for Liverpool as week ago and shall be ready to go in about a week. I shall expect you to write me so that I can get it as soon as we get there. It will take from five to six weeks to go across, we shall stand a good chance to go to Boston from Liverpool, if we do I shall get home the last of September. I am in good health now and have been since we have been here. I still continue to like the officers and am in good spirits. Joe Hayes will wish he had stopped ashore before he has been many days at sea. He will find things altogether different from what he expects. I just asked the Capt. who the Consignee is to be out Liverpool. He said he did not know but told me to tell you to direct your letters in care of the American Consal[?] I can think of nothing else to write so I will close, give my love to Abbie, Ed, & Aunt M. when you write them. From your Affec son Leonard. |
