Scope & Content |
Handwritten letter dated August 26th 1849 from Andrew Leonard Emerson in Kennebunk to his parents Charles O. Emerson and Harriet (Phillips) Emerson in York. It discusses Leonard's studies at school as well as some family news such as Edward being "unwell", Edward visiting South Berwick, and that Aunt D and the children had gone. Leonard gets along in his studies very well. He says that he wrote a composition the other day describing a tornado that occurred there recently. Leonard says he is very much obliged for that cake you sent me, as it tasted like home. Transcription: Dear Parents, I received your letter last Thursday and was very sorry to hear Edward was unwell. I hope he will recover soon. I shall come home next Friday with Mr. Topping[?] if nothing presents. I was very sorry that you could not come down last Sabbath. I truly expected you. I suppose Edward will go to Andover before I come home. I get along in my studies very well. I believe there is to be no examination this term. I wrote a composition the other day describing a tornado which occurred here last Thursday. I am very much obliged to you for that cake you sent me it was very nice, it tasted like home. I suppose the family is quite small not. Aunt D. and the children have gone. Mr. Topping[?] told me he brought Ed over from Portsmouth the other day I hope he enjoyed his visit to South Berwick. I wish I could see Ed before he goes away but suppose I can not. I would write the rest if I had time. Love to all. From your affec. son Leonard |
