Handwritten letter to Joseph Young highway surveyor of York from the Selectmen of York, Joseph Weare Jr., Joseph Junkins, and Alexander McIntire dated June 5, 1819. Letter reads, "In the name of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts you are required to levey and collect of the several persons named in the lists herewith committed unto you it being a tax voted and agreed upon the third day of May [illegible] for repairing and amending the highway within the town of York, you are to complete and make up an account of your collection of the whole sum on or before the first day of May next, and if any person shall refuse or neglect to work or cause to work on the highways within your limits and under your direction or pay the same which he is assesed to them in money for the purpose of repairing the highways, to Distrain(?) any of the goods or chattles of such person which is not exempted by law from such distraint(?) and you are to proceed with such distraint(?) so taken as the law directs in such cases, and to return the over[illegible] if any there be which may arise from the sale of such Distress, to the owner as soon as may be." |
