Handwritten letter dated March 15, 1866 from Andrew Leonard Emerson in New York to his mother Harriet (Phillips) Emerson in York. Leonard writes that he will leaving tomorrow and is happy with the ship and crew. He also writes about selling stocks and his inability to sell The Toledo Bond. He is going to send Power of Attorney with Fannie. He tells his mother to take care of her health and that despite him being "rough" with her at home he loves her. Transcription: My Dear Mother, I only have a moment to spare to reply to your letter which I received yesterday. I cleared from the Custom House yesterday & shall sail tomorrow if possible. I like the ship very much Mr. Brooks & family were on board yesterday, very much pleased with the ship tc [etc.]. Fannie & I have stopped there since leaving Astor House [New York City hotel built by John Jacob Astor] Tuesday. I like my officers very well, Fannie will give you all the particulars. I enclose bill of sale of those stocks which I hope will be satisfactory. The Toledo Bond I shall send you by Fanny as it is impossible to sell it here. Altho I have no doubt it is perfectly good. I shall have to keep the recpts[sic] for the sale of those [?] to carry me thru. Wish I could have sold the bond then I could have sent you $300 I will send Power of Attorney by Franny. Do take care of your health dear mother. I am rough when I am at home I know but I do love you mother dear & I know you know it. Love to Abbie & all the family. Remember me to all my friends. Write me at Savannah next week. Ships name tc [etc.]. Remember me when I am gone. Yours affectly[sic] Leonard Fannie sends her love |
