Description |
Old Gaol Museum interior featuring 18th century bed rug in bed chamber setting. Bed rugs were found mainly in the Connecticut River Valley and northern New England. A forerunner of hooked rugs, bed rugs were used not on the floor but as a coverlet on beds. The hooked-like appearance is actually yarn sewn, employing a running stitch which has been looped on the surface. Bed rugs appear in inventories from the early 18th century through the mid 19th century. |
