Description |
Black and white photograph of the northwest corner of Old Gaol from base of hill. Rhoda Bunker Fernald Abbott is the figure on the path in front of the building. Abbot (1803-1897) was a tenant in the Old Gaol and gave tours of the site and building. She became known as "Ye Jaileress." She vacated her Old Gaol rooms in 1895. A note written on the back of the original photo reads: "Old York Jail, Mrs. Abbott, Caretaker, About 1875 [1885]. My great-great grandmother [sic] Rhoda Maria (Bunker) Abbott m. Henry Abbott. Her parents: Valentine & Hannah (Phillips) Bunker. Wilbur Abbott Trueman, great-great grandson." Note on back of photograph copy reads: "Old York Jail, Mrs. Abbott, Caretaker, About 1875. The above note was written by my aunt, Mabel G. (Abbott) Holt on the back of the original card from which this picture is taken. Mabel and my mother Inez E. (Abbott) Hoyt were great grand daughters of Rhoda (Bunker) Abbott, the lady in the picture. The original card is owned by Wilbur Abbott Trueman of Cape Neddick, Maine." |
