Description |
Photographic album with black leather cover. Gold leaf embossing on front cover reading, "York / 1893." Album consists of 16 pages, with one photograph on the front and back of each page, totaling 32 photographs. Photographs are black and white and are mounted to white cardstock pages. Pages are attached to the spine of the album with white string ties. Photographs depict various places around York Beach, including York Harbor, York River, Marshall House, Stage Neck, and more. Photographs are mostly scenic landscapes, but also include some of people partaking in various activities such as canoeing, walking on the beach, playing tennis, and swimming. Inscription on the inside front cover in black ink reads, "Property of / Marvin Breckinridge Patterson." The album was given by Mary Marvin Breckinridge Patterson in 1991. Given the age of this album, it was likely created by an ancestor or family member of the Patterson family, possibly a Goodrich. Photograph number 12 is a photograph of York Harbor. Per research by Virginia Spiller: Summer visitors rented canoes at Varrell wharf to leisurely paddle up the York River to the "Birches", a favorite picnic spot near Card's Rock on Ram's Point. Later the canoes were used as transportation to Millard Sewall's wharf near the York Golf Course and a round of golf, tennis, croquet or tea at Mary Noble's dining room. Photograph number 33 is a photograph of York Harbor. Per research by Virginia Spiller: The patrons and friends of the Albracca Hotel (turreted building in center on horizon) may be headed to Varrell’s Green for a tennis game or to Varrell's wharf to rent a canoe for a river cruise. The hotel was designed by architect E.B. Blaisdell and built by E. W. Baker in 1890. The building had a capacity of 150 people. It was destroyed by fire in 1924. Mary Marvin (Breckinridge) Patterson (1905 – 2002), was an American photojournalist, cinematographer, and philanthropist. She was born in New York City, to John C. Breckinridge, of the prominent Kentucky Breckinridge family, and Isabella Goodrich Breckinridge, daughter of B. F. Goodrich. She had three brothers, Cabell, Chad and Robert. The Breckinridge/Goodrich family owned River House (also known as the Isabella Breckinridge House) on York River. Designed by architect Guy Lowell and completed in 1905, the 23-room mansion was built for Mary Marvin's grandmother, Mary Goodrich, widow of tire magnate B. F. Goodrich. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. |
