Description |
Small white earthenware mug with decal image of Old Gaol. The mug curves in at top, color decal of "Old Jail, York, ME, 1653" on front. Dark brown painted stripes around rim, base and down handle. Base unglazed. Stamped on base "Wheelock / Made in Germany / Dresden". The Wheelock family began importing ceramic dinnerware for sale in Wisconsin before the Civil War. In the early 1890’s Charles Wheelock expanded the business into the latest craze, "souvenir china". The business grew quickly and soon employed over thirty salesmen selling souvenir ceramics in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Germany and Austria had the raw material to produce high quality hard paste porcelain and were the major source of souvenir wares. |
