Description |
Puzzle in wood carrying case, once available for rent from the Cummings Store, York Village, Maine. Wooden frame with sliding cover secured with a small decorated brass clasp. A jigsaw puzzle is held in place within the frame and cover. The 187-piece puzzle, is a photographic image of a Native American silhouetted against the sky. The figure stands on a tall rock, back turned from the viewer, looking across a body of water. The image is in green tones. Location of scene might be "Old Man of the Sea" of York Beach, an anthropomorphized rock formation which was a tourist attraction in late 19th and early 20th centuries. The puzzle is made of paper adhered to plywood. Puzzle piece in LR corner includes manufacturing information, "G P 1230/Litho. in U.S.A." Country abbreviation is repeated in almond shaped outline. Affixed to back of carrying case is a rectangular paper label printed with text "No.____ [space] No. pcs____/Property of/Harry M. Cummings/York Village, Maine/Price per day____." Handwritten in ink on appropriate dotted lines is number " 49," "187" pieces, rented at "5 [cents symbol]" per day. Printed in italicized text: "If one or more pieces are lost, person renting puzzle must buy / it at wholesale price of one-half cent for each piece plus 25c / for box. Puzzle must be returned assembled in case." The word, "assembled," is bolded in all capital letters. |
