Description |
White soft paste porcelain ashtray. Round base with molded scrollwork and scalloped rim trimmed with metallic gold. Black transfer print image of the "Fairmount House, York Beach, ME" on center interior. Marked on base "Made in Germany for / M. Wolf / York Beach ME". Originally built in York Beach around 1887, the Fairmount was a grand hotels that started as a boarding house, grew in size, and was later torn down to make way for the Surf Breaker Motel. At its height it could accommodate 125 people. The left side was a later addition. During prohibition, the Fairmount advertised that half of its property was dry--the empty half in front of the hotel! |
