This pitcher features busts of military heroes of the Battle of Waterloo - Wellington on one side and Blucher on the other. Under the pitcher spout are motifs of "Peace & Plenty" including cornucopia, shaking hands, and caduceus (Greek symbol: rod with entwined snakes and pair of wings). Written on the pitcher's base by Viele family: "Belonged to Dr. James Simpson / San Francisco". Simpson was a medical doctor in Calis, Maine, who relocated to San Francisco to doctor miners during the gold rush. |
